As mentioned before the box will draw the eyes of new gamers in your Group or possibly those who aren't as familiar with board games, and thus Takenoko excels at being a wonderful introductory game for them.

There is a great feeling of playing a competitive game with everyone without any of the stress of games with more conflict; everything is very calm and relaxed as players take their actions.

Even when someone moves the Panda to eat the bamboo you've been growing for three turns, it's all very fun and forgiving.

Who could ever get mad at that hungry little cutey happily munching away at all your hard work? The limited confrontation that is introduced with his mechanic of you choosing to grow bamboo while another player might be choosing to eat bamboo is good friendly fun.

Besides, you better believe that afterwards you'll be trying to fulfill your own Panda objective and get them back on your next turn. This game plays very quickly but still delivers a decent amount of planning and tactics that you can experiment with.

I find it a very rewarding game with its charm and beauty being forefront among its qualities. The random element of the die roll at the beginning of your turn can add some additional variety and change to each of your turns, but a lot of your game choices will be a bit of give and take with the other players.

It's almost cooperative at times in that some of your actions might secretly be benefiting your opponents and vice versa, again coming back to how simple and relaxed game play is.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to anyone, this plays wonderfully at 2 players and above and is quite kid friendly. You'll have no trouble teaching this to anyone and be playing full games in less than 10 minutes or so, most players can even pick up and learn the game just by having experienced players go first.

Takenoko may be too light of a game for someone looking for advanced strategy and wanting lots of confrontation and optimization. This game will however be perfect for anyone just wanting to play and explore a lovely bamboo garden, find joy in placing stacking those great pieces higher and higher, or anyone who just saw the Panda and knows they can pop it around the board and gobble up points.

This is a winner in our home, and a game that we'll come back to for a long time; we hope you enjoy it as well!

I purchased this game for three reasons: 1 I love board games. As simple as its premise is, this game has quite a bit of depth. It's certainly not chess.

But don't let the colorful, cartoonish design fool you: there is strategy involved. Each turn, you control one of three aspects in game: the gardener token , the panda token , or the land itself tile.

And each aspect has its own mini-goals cards to score points. While it's not really a cut-throat game, the moves of other players can mess with your plans, so you need to be flexible.

The weather die , rolled at the beginning of each turn, creates a special weather condition for that turn. It's a nice bit of randomness to keep things interesting without making the game entirely luck-based.

As always, the player with the most points at the end of the game wins. User concerns: "Too Long" So far I've only done 2-player matches, each lasting roughly 30 minutes.

I can't imagine more players would slow things down too much. The game even adjusts its rounds based on the amount of players. Overall, this is an amusing, colorful introduction to the world of board gaming.

While it's most definitely "family fare", it's still engaging enough to keep more experienced gamers entertained for an hour or two.

I've only played 2-player so far, but really love it. The game design achieves a nice balance of strategy, counter-strategy and some randomness.

You can't do too much that your opponents can't see, which I think makes it all the more fun. I haven't played it with kids yet, but it seems like a great intro to these games once they're old enough.

The flavor concepts are great - a hungry panda, a gardener watering, a die for weather conditions. The game tiles look great, and there's some extra art in there just for fun.

The panda and gardener pieces are well detailed for a board game, certainly beyond what they needed to do. It also seems like a game you could easily make house rules for without too much testing.

My only gripe minor game play spoiler would be, so far, in a two player game, if one person goes straight bamboo-eating as their strat, as long as the die rolls and tile draws don't completely go against them, it's tough for the other player to out-do.

But maybe I've just been lucky so far or missing a rule somewhere, who knows. And, like I said, there's plenty of room to house rule a win condition, and if you're playing with kids, I don't think you're going to need to worry about broken strategies.

I really like this game. The quality of the game pieces is very good. The hex cards are heavy cardboard, the bamboo, water, token and die are made from wood.

I really like the storage tray they designed to keep all the pieces sorted. All the other components are a nice quality which will help the game stand up to many hours of playtime.

As for the game. I have really enjoyed playing. I watched some playthroughs online to help learn the game. After playing through myself I quickly got a good understanding of the game.

I don't have any other games like this one so I like that it is unique. I host game nights for college students.

Many of the students that come to play games are international students. Having a game that relies on pictures and symbols is a huge plus.

I would definitely recommend this game. One person found this helpful. See all reviews. Top reviews from other countries.

There are some great full reviews of this game ou there so I will keep it simple. This game is more of a relaxing experience, it's not about intensity or conflict, its almost zen like, a calm and considered experience.

There are some who critique that there is very little strategy to this game but we have found that you need to play a few games before the strategies start to form.

My girlfriend loves this game, when I asked her her rating she said 5 without hesitation and we have had fun playing it together.

If you like a more intense experience or a game with obvious conflict you may not be so keen. Takenoko is a very fun game. You have to grow and harvest shoots of bamboo while completing tasks for points.

Each turn you can take multiple actions in an attempt to satisfy the criteria on the cards to score points.

These include collecting bamboo, arranging tiles on certain patterns, or growing bamboo to certain heights. You use a farmer to grow the bamboo, but there's a hungry panda to eat the bamboo too!

Games take 30 minutes or so, and is great fun for 2 players. The figures, cards, and tiles are very nicely illustrated, and they all feel high quality.

This game was recommended to me by a friend and is an absolute family hit! It is unusual in that you determine each time what moves you would like to make.

The instructions take a while to get your head around but we have played the game loads since Christmas.

A game of three players lasts about 30 - 45 minutes so it doesn't drag on for hours too!!! You can lengthen or shorten the game to by deciding how many objectives to complete so great for a family night when you don't have a lot of time or make the fun last longer if you want to.

Makes such a change from the kids staring at their Ipads. My daughters are 9 and 13, but myself and my husband love this game too.

Must buy!!! Whole family loves this game. It looks lovely and the components are good quality. Takes about 45 minutes to play.

I like playing 2 player because it reduces the downtime particularly if you have slow players! Also colourblind friendly. Delivery was quick and well packaged.

An intriguing board game which is easy enough to pick up but gets increasingly strategic as play goes on. The artwork is colourful and slightly cartoony in places but the hexagonal board pieces are almost like watercolour paintings.

Players get to choose two actions from five possible each turn and can stockpile certain game elements for later use. It takes around 45 minutes to play and the sectional nature of the board pieces means that no two games will play out in the same way.

We played as a family with the youngest player being seven and everyone got to grips with it easily enough. Pages with related products.
